November 2020 Question

Why is the prevention of slips, trips and falls important at a workplace?

Slips and trips happen when there isn’t enough friction or traction between your feet and the surface you’re walking on. In 2013, injuries from slips, trips and falls resulted in 229,190 cases involving days away from work, and 724 workers died, according to the 2016 edition of the National Safety Council. Falls occur when someone is working above ground level and loses their footing, causing them to fall to the ground. This probably makes you think of people working on a ladder or on a roof, but the reality is that many serious or fatal fall injuries are from falls below head height. Sometimes all it takes is hitting your head hard or landing on a limb at a bad angle to incur a serious injury.

These sobering statistics are a stark reminder that workers need to know how to prevent slips, trips, and falls.

When there is an unexpected change in the contact between your feet and the ground or walking surface, the result is usually a slip or trip. The quality of walking surfaces is critical in preventing slip and trips.
At FibreGrid we offer a wide range of GRP Anti Slip Flat Sheets. Our  SlipGrip anti slip flooring sheet range is highly durable and excellent quality, reaching the highest standards of safety for your premises. We also stock various different GRP Anti Slip Stair Tread Covers – our SlipGrip GRP covers are made by pultrusion through a steel die rather than the hand lay-up method, meaning they are far more durable than other covers on the market.

FibreGrid offers a fully comprehensive solution to all potential slip hazards. Here are some of our top tips for slip-proofing your work premises.

  • Identify the area of your premises with the heaviest foot traffic. Do you have one main entrance area used by employees and visitors alike? Do you have a walkway through your warehouse where most of your foot traffic occurs? The more foot traffic, the higher chance of a slip or fall, so make sure you pay extra attention to these areas when choosing your anti slip solution. FibreGrid offer branded anti slip floor mats for your premises, so not only will your premises entrance offer an extremely durable anti slip flooring solution, but will also look aesthetically pleasing for your premises. We also offer anti slip GRP line marking panels for those areas in your warehouse that see the most foot traffic.

  • We all know how easy it is to trip up the stairs (or down them), so areas requiring extra attention when slip proofing your property are any staircases or steps across your premises. FibreGrid offer a huge range of anti slip stair solutions including stair tread covers, nosings, anti slip paints and tapes – all suitable for any budget. Make sure you choose the right solution for the level of traffic your stairs sees. For rarely used fire escapes, FibreGrid’s SlipGrip Standard Stair Tread Covers are ideal, however if you have entrance stairs that see large amounts of employee or visitor foot traffic, our aluminium reinforced stair tread covers may suit you better.

  • Our next tip is to hazard spot your premises. Walk around your premises and look around for any hazard that may pose a potential trip threat. Are there any holes, potholes or uneven paths on your premises? FibreGrid offer concrete repair products which allow you to quickly and easily patch these issues up. Are there any areas prone to getting wet (which may then ice or moss up in the winter months?) Is any of your machinery leaking fluid which may cause a fatal slip? Is any of your current anti slip solution too worn to be doing it’s job property? A full checklist can be found here for things to look out for.

  • Our final tip is to identify areas with limited natural light. If you have a particularly dark section of your warehouse, or if you have areas used by pedestrian during night time hours, then you open yourself up to a higher potential for slips and falls due to limited visibility. Other than ensuring  these areas are well lit, you may also want to provide glow in the dark flooring for your foot traffic. FibreGrid offer our Safety Glow range – anti slip GRP flooring which glows in the dark – showing pedestrian exactly where to put their feet to avoid any accidents.

If you don’t have the time or capability to carry out our tips, then FibreGrid are here to help! We will come to your premises for a site survey, and provide you with a flooring risk assessment and method statement, along with a quote for slip proofing your premise that meets your budget.
